Matching carers to children
06.09.2009 at 23:29:21

I've been talking to a childcare provider about finding a suitable childminder to take care of my children one evening a month to allow me and my partner to get out.  But when I asked about matching a carer to my child, I wasn't given a satisfactory answer.  It seems it's not standard practice to match childminders with children, regardless of their needs, but I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving my kids with anyone who didn't try to get to know them and earn their trust.  Any advice anyone?

Hi

Reading you comment it looks like you are looking for a babysitter, not a registered childminder.
If you are interested in looking for a registered childminder then I suggest you contact the Childminding Team on 0207 525 5159 or 0207 525 5263, they have Co-ordinators which support childminders caring for children with additional needs.

All registered childminders in Southwark have a Childminding Co-ordinator to support them and should have a current first aid certificate and have done a childcare course. Many have done much more.
However, Childminders usually work from 8am to 6pm and could be difficult to find care in the evenings.

Hi Jo See

Thanks for this useful information, but I really am after someone who can look after my children in the evening.  Do you know of any suitable 'baby-sitting' services, or of any childminders who might take on extra work in the evenings?  Anyone?  Prefer to go by recommendation and person should be insured and prepared to carry child upstairs (3st in weight, but hangs on you!)

Thanks

The other possibility is contacting a local childcare setting and asking if any of their staff would be able to babysit.
Most staff have training in child development, first aid, etc They have also been CRB checked giving more peace of mind.
Childcare workers aren't the best paid but are passionate about children.

Hi Peaches6

There is a new service called the At Home Childcare Service, which matches parents with cares that need childcare during unsociable hours. The contact is Joanne Bleau 020 7525 5042. I think this would be your best bet. The carers have 1st aid, liability insurance and have had childcare training plus many are experienced childcarers working to get a little extra cash.

Good luck
