Annual Reviews
06.09.2009 at 22:06:01

My daughter's annual review took place in June, and was nothing like any other I'd been to before.  It was far better for the appointment of an interim SENCo, who met with me in advance and invited people I thought should be there.  In previous years I've attended a 'meeting' with an Inclusion Manager, the class teacher and my daughter's LSA, but have never received any notes of these meetings.  It turns out, neither had the LEA ... and so my daughter's statement had not been properly reviewed for 3-4 years.  Has anyone else out there had a similar experience?  And do you feel, as I do, that schools should tell you from the outset what to expect from an annual review?

I've heard other parents describe ARs as 'scary', but this isn't my experience?

I always find the Annual Reviews depressing as the staff present always seem to go on about the problems and difficulties, rather than the positives or solutions.

I just received a letter from the LEA saying that the Statement had been reviewed and would stay the same. This was the first time I heard anything about reviewing my son's statement since he started school four years ago!

Me too.  I got my first letter from Southwark this year too, and my daughter's had a statement for 5 years!

You need the Code of Practice on Special Educational Needs which sets out exactly what an annual review should be like and how it should be done. Did you know, for instance, that ALL paperwork should be circulated to everyone coming to the meeting (ie including you the parent) in time for you to get it, read it AND REPLY before the meeting.

So if the meeting consists mainly of whinging you should get at least 10 days warning of it and time to formulate your response -- maybe they should ask the council for more support instead of moaning to you, for example
