Hi

I'm creating a Facebook group and will email everyone on our email list to invite them to join and/or remind them about the website and e-forum. I don't think we can put everything on the Facebook page, but I hope parents will use it to share information about what's going on in Southwark for kids with disabilities or additional needs and their families.
You should get an email within the next few weeks.
The National Autistic Society are doing a survey into the mental health of children between 0-21 with an ASD. If anyone is interested in taking part in this survey (there's no reward except satisfaction in the knowledge that the NAS are exceptionally good at getting things done) go to www.nas.org.uk

Hi L

Have you seen the information on our website re disability swimming sessions at the Peckham Pulse etc? They're not at a very good time, I'm afraid, but are specifically for children and their parent carers, whereas the other disability swimming sessions are open to disabled adults as well. Otherwise there are a number of afterschool and weekend disability sports clubs starting up in the borough. Again see our website for more details - look under meetings and events/clubs and activities.

If none of these suit, there is a drop in afterschool play scheme for children with autism and other disabilities/additional needs and this runs from 3.45-6.45pm on Mondays during term time at Spa Gardens Adventure Playground. Again, info on our website.

Hope this is useful.

Childcare - Matching carers to children

Hi Peaches6

There is a new service called the At Home Childcare Service, which matches parents with cares that need childcare during unsociable hours. The contact is Joanne Bleau 020 7525 5042. I think this would be your best bet. The carers have 1st aid, liability insurance and have had childcare training plus many are experienced childcarers working to get a little extra cash.

Good luck
Jo See

Education - Annual Reviews

You need the Code of Practice on Special Educational Needs which sets out exactly what an annual review should be like and how it should be done. Did you know, for instance, that ALL paperwork should be circulated to everyone coming to the meeting (ie including you the parent) in time for you to get it, read it AND REPLY before the meeting.

So if the meeting consists mainly of whinging you should get at least 10 days warning of it and time to formulate your response -- maybe they should ask the council for more support instead of moaning to you, for example

Adapting PE. Neither the SENCo at my daughter's school, nor her physio, seems to know where to start, but I've recently seen snippets from the CD-Rom issued to schools by the DCSF on Implementing the DDA in Schools and now know that there's heaps of ideas out there.
Have you checked out the Inclusive Solutions website? Or www.worldofinclusion.com? I recently attended a day's training by Richard Rieser and he and his team are only too willing to train or advise teaching staff on inclusive practice.
Otherwise I'm reading Seeing the Charade - What We Need to Do and Undo to Make Friendships Happen. V American, but makes a lot of sense. I can now appreciate how some practices (that are supposed to help children with SEN access the curriculum) can be counter-productive; set the child apart and perpetuate low self-esteem. It's scary. Could go on ...

Workforce Development - Parents as trainers

What a brilliant idea. You know you child better then anyone and helping to raise awareness of different conditions will, hopefully, lead to less fear and more inclusion.
I think it is important to have a sound understanding of some of the medical details, e.g. seizures etc. But we mustn't forget that each child is an individual. I have never met a child with ASD who was like any other but it has been useful to know pointers on ASD.
